Scientists from the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt, Germany and the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil discovered the remains of a python snake, which is said to be 47 million years old, near the city of Darmstadt. It was announced that the discovery in question is the oldest relic ever.
While the evolutionary origins of the pioneers of today’s pythons are unknown, paleontologist Krister Smith said, “Our analysis shows that they also developed in Europe.”
According to the research institute, pythons are more than six meters tall and are among the largest snakes in the world. Today it mostly lives in Africa, South and Southeast Asia and Australia. The findings show that they fled Europe as the global climate cooled. For this reason, it is stated that the thesis that pythons live with boa constrictors in the ecosystem and that these snake families are in competition should now be reconsidered.
